There is new environmental campaign vital to Sydney’s future: the recycling of our waste water. Right now we are flushing 450 billions of water out to sea as barely treated sewerage. This is 75% of Sydney’s annual useage. Not only is it fouling our oceans, but it is wasting a vital natural resources: Sydney’s freshwater. We use about 700 billion litres each year; if we were to recycle our sewerage we could lift our water supply to more than 60% of capacity in the first year (up from 42% today) and up to 80% in the following year. For whatever reason the NSW Government will not take large scale recycling seriously. Despite the obvious absurdity of a water restricted city, facing a drier future, wasting so much water, there has been no serious (let alone public) analysis of our recycling options. Sydney Water’s solutions seem to be limited to (a) praying for rain, (b) lowering the level of the pumps at Warragamba, (c) praying for rain again, (d) plundering more water from the Shoalhaven (where the locals are up in arms), (e) doing a rain dance, (f) studying desalination. Yet the environmentally responsible and utterly obvious solution is staring at us. The campaign will be launched at Bondi Beach (outside North Bondi Surf Club) tomorrow Tuesday 22 March at 9 am.
